In short

Swiss passport (and passports from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Eritrea and many other countries): you get the e-Visa online. With eVisas.ch from CHF 70, all included.
Pakistani passport or Pakistani origin: no e-Visa, only a regular visa through the Indian mission.
Swiss travel document (for example for refugees): no e-Visa. You need the visa through the embassy, with eVisas.ch CHF 290.
With an OCI card (Overseas Citizen of India) you usually need no visa. Ask us if you're not sure.

Documents you need

Passport, page with your photo and details as a scan. The passport must be valid for at least 6 more months when you apply.
Two blank pages in the passport for the entry stamps.
Face photo: square, white or light background, full face from the front, eyes open, no glasses, no shadows.
Return or onward flight: you need a ticket out of India when you arrive.
Enough money for your stay in India.
A passport of their own for every child: children listed in a parent's passport can't get an e-Visa.

30 days: for one trip of up to 30 days, can't be extended.
1 year: several entries within a year. At most 180 days in India per calendar year.
With a travel document: application through the embassy. It takes much longer, count on 40–50 days.

At least 4 days before arrival the application must be submitted and paid. Earlier is better.
Arrival only at certain airports: with the e-Visa you can enter at 33 airports, including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kochi, Trivandrum, Madurai, Tiruchirapalli and Coimbatore.
e-Arrival card: India asks all travellers to fill in an online e-Arrival card within 72 hours before arrival. It's not a visa, just the arrival information.
Yellow fever: if you come from a yellow fever country, you need your vaccination card.
The e-Visa can't be extended or changed into another visa.
